Greece can help implement humanitarian mission to save inhabitants of Mariupol – Zelensky in address to Greek parliamentarians

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, addressing the Greek Parliament, has said that this country can help implement a humanitarian mission to save the residents of Mariupol.

"I urge you now to openly create such a new community of friends that will be able to save Ukrainians and Greeks in the south of our state, which will be able to help Mariupol. The city needs humanitarian aid, rescuing the survivors and the wounded from there. Russia has been blockading Mariupol since early March, on land and at sea. It does not allow even humanitarian cargo to pass through. I am sure that the power of Greece can help realize this mission. Every day counts," Zelensky said in a video message.

The head of state thanked Greece for the humanitarian and defense assistance already provided to Ukraine and support for the general sanctions policy against Russia, calling "to do more so that Russia begins to seek peace."

"The war continues. The destruction of Mariupol continues. The deportation of people from those territories where the Russian military came, continues... What will remain after Russian artillery and air bombs? I'll tell you: they will destroy our entire joint history, our joint heritage," he said.

Speaking to parliamentarians, Zelensky also mentioned possible attempts by Russia to destroy the city of Odesa, which is historically close to the Greeks.

"Russia can try to destroy Odesa, just like Mariupol. Today in Odesa, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding back Russian attacks... We must save Odesa from the destruction that Mariupol faced," the president said.

At the end of his speech, the head of state expressed confidence that all those responsible for war crimes would be brought to justice, that Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities would be restored.

"I also believe that soon Ukraine and Greece will live on an equal footing in our common home - the EU," he said.
