Parliament dismisses judges of Ukraine's Constitutional Court Stetsiuk and Paseniuk

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed the resolution on the dismissal of judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Petro Stetsiuka and Oleksandr Paseniuk.

A total of 241 MPs voted for the dismissal of Stetsiuk following his resignation at a plenary session on Tuesday, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

Paseniuk's dismissal from the post of the Constitutional Court judge in connection with his reaching 65 years of age was supported by 239 MPs.

Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Policy and Justice Ruslan Kniazevych of the Poroshenko Bloc fraction said Stetsiuk served as judge of the Constitutional Court for nine years and his term in this position has ended, so he asked the Verkhovna Rada to dismiss him from this position.

Kniazevych said that Stetsiuk did not support the decision of the Constitutional Court which allowed former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to usurp the power. Kniazevych praised Stetsiuk as an honest judge.

With regard to Paseniuk, Kniazevych recalled that in February of 2014, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Paseniuka as a judge of the Constitutional Court for violation of the oath. However, later the Administrative Court restored Paseniuk in his office.

According to Kniazevych, Paseniuk turned 65 back on July 7, 2014, which is the ceiling age for holding the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court.
