U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has called on Ukrainian authorities and society to change the Ukrainian Constitution in part of decentralization and court reform in the right direction.

"This is so important – do it right," he said at a roundtable in Kyiv on Thursday.

Debates on the Constitutional reform inspire optimism, the agreement between various political factions and civil society is an achievement, he said.

"I want to commend both the president and the prime minister: the reform is going in the right direction, and we hope that the president after this hard work will make further steps," he said.

"The really important burden for the Rada is to look at these issues through the lenses not of short-term political advantage of one or another political party, but what is better for Ukraine and Ukrainians," he said.

Pyatt also said that it is very important to apply the decentralization principle in those districts of Donbas which are under control of Ukraine now.

He said that there is a lack of the public trust to judicial power in Ukraine. He said that the large test of Revolution of Dignity is if rule of law is restored, and this is required for growth of the economy in the long-term outlook to attract foreign investors.

Pyatt said that not the United States decides on the future of Ukrainian democracy, Ukrainians should decide on this.

"Neither Moscow, Washington, nor Brussels should decide: this is your choice, you decide on your future, it is for you to decide," he said.
