Zelenskyy about U.S. assistance: I hope it won't fall away

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that both houses of the Congress would reach an agreement on the U.S. financial and defense assistance.

"I hope the United States of America will not fall away," he said at a joint press conference with German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday.

The Ukrainian president also said that a major part of the U.S. population support Ukraine and understands that Ukraine is defending not only itself, but also whole Europe and common values.

"I constantly receive such signals from the [U.S.] president, his administration and representatives of both parties of the Congress. There are different voices, there are radical ones, there are real hotheads in the United States who are engaged in the political process. But I still hope that, despite all difficulties which we can see today in the Congress and generally in U.S. policy due to elections, I still hope that among all this a pragmatic American approach will be for the fact that we are defending the whole world's security. And today this war and this defense are on the territory of Ukraine. And we are paying the highest price," Zelenskyy said.

When asked whether Germany and the EU in general would be able to close a defense and financial gap if the United States does not provide assistance, he said: "risks always exist."

"We count not only on Germany alone. We count on the entire European Union. Because it is not only about money or some type of weapons. This is a political union. This union allows to impose sanctions against Russia's defense industry. Much depends on strong unity of the countries of Europe. We count on the union of the countries of Europe in general. And on their alliance with the United States," Zelenskyy said.

He also noted that everyone in Europe realizes very well the necessity to ramp up weapons production.

"This must be done. Russia is ramping it up but it will lag behind Ukraine and the countries of Europe. You should know that Ukraine is also increasing it in times, and some types of weapons – in dozens of times. Certain types of drones – in hundreds and thousands of times," the head of state said.
