Ukraine, with its entry into IAEA Board of Governors, receives additional foreign policy instruments – regulator

Ukraine, having joined the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), received additional foreign policy instruments, acting Chairman of the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine Oleh Korikov said at the national telethon United News on Tuesday.

"Ukraine has gained additional influence in the external political vector when it comes to nuclear and radiation safety, safety of the use of nuclear energy," he noted.

According to the head of the nuclear regulator, Ukraine, in particular, received the right to vote and the opportunity to influence decisions made at regular sessions of the Board of Governors, the right to initiate the convening of extraordinary sessions of the Board of Governors on urgent issues relevant to the global atomic community, and the right to convene extraordinary sessions of the IAEA General Conference.

In addition, Kyiv will be able to participate in the review and approval of financial information, budgets and programs of the IAEA, the election of the chairman of the Board of Governors and other officials, as well as consider applications from applicant countries for membership in the agency.

As reported, Ukraine became a member of the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025 during the 67th session of the agency's General Conference, held from September 25 to September 29, 2023 in Vienna.
