UN intl. court waiting for Russia to provide info on restoring work of Mejlis before January 2019 – Zerkal

The International Court of Justice of the United Nations has sent a request to Russia about implementing the UN order item on the resumption of activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea. It says it is waiting for information on the results until January 19, 2019, said Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal.

"We have just received a letter from the International Court of Justice in which the Court informed us that it sent a claim to the Russian Federation … regarding the implementation of the binding UN order on the resumption of the operation of the Mejlis ... By its letter, the court ... directly drew attention to Russia that the order is mandatory, the demand to resume the Mejlis is clear and needs specific measures, Russia should take these measures and inform the court about them before January 19, 2019," she wrote on her Facebook page on Thursday.

Zerkal said since it was obvious to Ukraine that Russia was not going to cancel the discriminatory ban on the activities of the Mejlis, as stipulated by the order of the International Court of Justice, on April 19 Ukraine asked the court to confirm that Russia is obliged to cancel the prohibition of the Mejlis activity in accordance with the order of this court dated April 19, 2017 on the application of provisional measures.

As earlier reported, the International Court of Justice (The Hague) within the framework of the lawsuit of Ukraine against the Russian Federation on April 19, 2017 announced the decision according to which Russia is obliged to ensure the rights of the Crimean Tatars in Crimea, to allow the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and to ensure the accessibility of education in the Ukrainian language.

On April 24, 2018, Ukraine appealed to the International Court of Justice to provide explanations on the status of implementation of the preliminary court decision in the framework of the lawsuit of Ukraine against Russia on the application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in particular, to restore the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

In May 2018, the UN International Court appealed to Russia with a request to provide information on the implementation of the court's order regarding the resumption of activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea.
