Control over exports of scrap metal should be toughened for ATO period

A special regime to control the origin of scrap metal sent for exports should be introduced in Ukraine for the period of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO), MP Serhiy Taruta has told reporters.

"I have information that industrial plants are being actively cut for scrap metal and this scrap is sent for exports via Ukraine. They destroy whole plants. The special regime to control the origin of scrap metal sent for exports should be introduced for the ATO period. The commission should include representatives of law enforcement agencies," he said.

Taruta also said that exports of scrap ferrous metal from Ukraine should be restricted, as its shortage could trigger suspension of production at metal companies and growth of social tension in eastern regions.

"Social stability in Mariupol and other towns where metal works are located also depends on how their production lines are loaded. Some 1.2 million Ukrainian workers are engaged in the metal sector. Uncontrolled exports of scrap metal from Ukraine, the core materials for this sector, are threatening stable operation of the plants. This is inadmissible," he said.
