Venice Commission to provide final conclusion on lustration law in June- Justice Minister

Experts of the Venice Commission will provide a final conclusion on Ukraine's lustration law in June, 2015, Justice Minister Petro Petrenko has said.

"We expect that in May their preliminary conclusions will be [ready]. Before that we'll communicate once more. And in June, there will be a final conclusion on the law and the amendments to be presented in the parliament," Petrenko said on Thursday in the air of the First National TV channel.

"I hope our arguments were heard by Venice Commission experts," he added.

As reported, President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio said that that lustration in Ukraine should be suspended for the time being in order to finalize the law on purging the authorities.

"The head of the Venice Commission has expressed an opinion that the process of lustration should be suspended and the relevant law should be finalized first," Poroshenko's press service reported on the results of his meeting with Buquicchio.

The commission head said that the current law on lustration was bad, and the Venice Commission was very critical in its assessments.

"But we have come to a consensus in discussions with your representatives, and agreed with the justice minister to work together on finalizing and bringing this law in line with European standards," the Venice Commission head said.

In response, Petrenko said that the lustration process in Ukraine would be continued, as society called for it, although Ukraine would take into consideration recommendations on the matter from the European Commission for Democracy through Law.
