Two killed, eight injured as shell hits passenger bus in Donetsk

Two people were killed and another eight were injured when an artillery shell hit a passenger bus in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine on Tuesday morning, the head of the city's Kyivsky district administration, Ivan Prykhodko, said on his Facebook page.

"Marshal Zhukov Avenue came under fire at 0800 a.m. school No. 21, as well as several private houses and shops were damaged. Unfortunately, fatalities could not have been avoided. Two people were killed and another eight were injured on bus No. 6," he said.

A regional hospital spokesman said that the clinic was currently treating one local resident. Two other people injured in the blast were admitted to the facial trauma department of another hospital, he said.

The Donetsk city administration has confirmed the incident.

It also said that three civilians had been killed and another eight had been injured as a result of shelling in Donetsk on Monday.

The situation was quite tense in the city last night. Several houses and some of the infrastructure in the city's Kyivsky, Kuibyshevsky, Leninsky and Petrovsky districts were destroyed in overnight artillery strikes, which also damaged local gas mains, the city authorities said on their website.

Six boiler rooms in Donetsk remain without water and power supplies. Forty-three buildings in the city, including 34 residential buildings, two hospitals, three kindergartens, two schools and two enterprises have no central heating at the moment.

The situation in Donetsk remained tense on Tuesday morning, the city administration said.

The Ukrainian army, for its part, has accused militants of repeatedly breaching the September 5 ceasefire.

The army operation press center said on its Facebook page that in the past 24 hours, the adversary had carried out 36 strikes against army-controlled positions using artillery weapons, mortars and Grad multiple-launch rocket systems.

Strikes were conducted against Verkhnia Vilkhivka, Stanytsia Luhanska, Triokhizbenka, Krymske, Kriakivka, Schastia, Makarove and Nyzhnie Teple in the Luhansk region, as well as against Olenivka, Novotroitske, Mykolayivka, Krasnohorivka, Avdiyivka, Pisky, Vesele, Tonenke and Berezove in the Donetsk region, the press center said.
