Samopomich wants coalition agreement to be joint product of all coalition members – statement

Samopomich Union, which showed the third result on party lists in Ukraine's early parliamentary elections, has outlined the key coalition formation principles that it will observe at respective negotiations.

A statement released on the party's Web site on Wednesday says that one of the principles is the equality of coalition members: "The text of the coalition agreement should be a joint product of coalition members. Coalition members should be equally represented in the governing bodies of the coalition. Coalition members should have the right of veto on certain issues."

According to the statement, another important principle is constitutionality.

"The coalition formation process should take place exclusively within the scope and in the manner prescribed by the Constitution of Ukraine. Only deputy factions in parliament should be involved in forming the coalition," reads the statement.

In addition, the purpose and objectives of the coalition "cannot limit the powers of deputies in the legislative process."

Samopomich also sees as a priority the principle of publicity. "The coalition formation process should be initiated and proceed in public. The discussion of candidates for the posts of ministers and heads of other central executive government agencies, as well as other public bodies with special status, should be public," the party said.

Samopomich also said that the participation in the coalition of MPs who voted for the anti-protest laws of January 16, 2014 was unacceptable.
