Batkivschyna allows possibility of Yatseniuk's cabinet resignation

The Ukrainian cabinet of ministers could resign after the ruling coalition fell apart, Batkivschyna faction leader Serhiy Sobolev said.

"Without a doubt this decision is for the government but we would like to hold political consultations with it because we are not an irresponsible political force. We have recommended [Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy] Yatseniuk and he took this difficult burden upon himself, so it is clear that we would like to hold these consultations," Sobolev told reporters on Thursday.

For now the faction does not have a single opinion whether the government should resign, he said.

Relevant decisions will be made in the framework of faction- and government-level consultations, Sobolev said.

When asked whether necessity existed to decide on government resignation after the coalition breakup, Sobolev referred to European traditions.

"In any European government, whichever situation it was in - default, on the verge of default or prosperous economy - coalition breakup has always led to government resignation. If we follow some European traditions, this is the mechanism. But circumstances exists, which both parties should take into account," Sobolev said.
