EU ready to offer economic assistance program to Ukraine, says MP Poroshenko after meeting with Ashton

The European Union is ready to offer Ukraine a program of economic assistance and a reforms program, co-chair of the EU-Ukraine parliamentary cooperation committee MP Petro Poroshenko said after a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"The European Union is seeking the stabilization of the situation in Ukraine and bringing the talks between the people, the opposition and the government to a new level," Poroshenko was quoted as saying by his press office.

During the meeting, Ashton said that the EU would dedicate this week to Ukraine. In particular, on Thursday, the European Parliament will focus exclusively on the Ukrainian issue in order to come up with decisions and resolutions on Ukraine.

"What these decisions will be will depend on the outcome of the negotiations in Kyiv," Poroshenko said.

He added that on February 10, the EU foreign ministers would hold a meeting during which they will address the Ukrainian issue and will coordinate the EU's further actions with regard to Ukraine.

"All these actions demonstrate that the Europeans are our reliable partners, and the association agreement, which was planned to be signed, was a real argument that the EU was ready to support the Ukrainian economy not only with words, but with deeds," Poroshenko said.
