Ukraine and Canada will resume suspended negotiations on the creation of a free trade zone between the two countries, the speaker of Ukraine's parliament has announced.

"We've agreed to continue the talks [on the free trade zone] and we are to sign an agreement on a free trade zone, so that our goods can enter Canada and Canadian goods can come to Ukraine," Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak told reporters on November 26, summarizing the results of his official visit to Canada.

The speaker said that he had met the governor general of Canada, and representatives of the Canadian government and opposition.

"We discussed Ukraine's integration with the EU," Rybak said.

"I informed our friends that [Ukraine's] main strategic course is integration with the EU. We're continuing this work. The president has confirmed this. We have to settle our economic relations with Russia, and we'll do so.

"We've raised the issue of visa facilitation so that our people can come to Canada and see how people live here, and how democracy works," he said.

Rybak also said that a lot of time at the meetings was devoted to the discussion of laws, and the traditions of the adoption and implementation of laws.

"Canada has a great deal of experience, and we'll work with specialists from Canada [so that] our new laws can be passed and adapted to match European standards," the speaker said, adding that he was satisfied with the results of his visit.
