The United States intends to become a full member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), a member of the Venice Commission, Regions Party parliamentary faction MP Serhiy Kivalov has said.

According to him, in January 2013 United States Deputy Secretary of State William Burns addressed the Secretary General of the Council of Europe with a request to provide the U.S. with the status of a full member of the Venice Commission.

On February 13, 2013, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to invite the U.S. to become a full member of the Venice Commission.

"I think that the date of official accession of the U.S. to the commission will be announced in the near future. I think that U.S. will become a member of a leading international European organization. I think it is a positive phenomenon. The globalization is obvious," Kivalov said.

He also said that the Venice Commission would consider some issues related to Ukraine soon.

"In early February President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio and Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert visited Ukraine. At a meeting in Venice we listened to their conclusions on their official visit. We will also inform the Venice Commission members about work of the Constitutional Assembly of Ukraine. To be precise, [we will inform them about] the work on the improvement of the constitution," he said.

According to Kivalov, the Venice Commission will give its expert assessment of the bill amending the Constitution of Ukraine soon.

"I hope Ukraine will soon submit this document to the Venice Commission for consideration," Kivalov said.
