EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has said he is confident that Ukraine has a European future.

"Arrived to Kyiv with confidence that through Association Agreement Ukraine emerges as modern, democratic European state," he wrote on Twitter upon arrival to Kyiv on Thursday.

Fule will stay in Ukraine for two days. He is planning to meet with the country's leaders, parliamentarians, government officials, opposition leaders, scientists and public representatives during the visit.

Sources in Europe say that the commissioner's visit was on the verge of being cancelled. He planned to speak at the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, but opposition MPs blocked the parliament's work and it was said that the meeting with Ukrainian parliamentarians could be cancelled.

In addition, the EU commissioner planned to participate in a meeting of the government, but the format of the meeting was changed. However, the sides managed to reach a compromise and avoid a diplomatic scandal.
