Ukraine has a chance of successful OSCE chairmanship, MPs say

Ukrainian MPs have said that Ukraine's chairmanship of the OSCE could have positive results and the country should take advantage of this opportunity.

"As a politician, I see Ukraine's OSCE chairmanship in the context of opportunities for the country," Party of Regions MP Olena Bondarenko said at a roundtable meeting "Ukraine's Chairmanship of the OSCE: A Formality or a Historic Opportunity?" in Kyiv on Thursday.

She said that not only the government, but also the opposition and civil society should work to achieve positive results from Ukraine's chairmanship.

Batkivschyna MP and former Foreign Minister Borys Tarasiuk, in turn, noted that it is unlikely that OSCE presidency will improve Ukraine's image abroad, since the situation in the country is a determining factor for this.

He said that this chairmanship gives opportunities for Ukraine. In particular, he noted that Ukraine was a guarantor in the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict and that the country's efforts should be focused on this issue. He also said that Russia remains the key country in this issue.

"Overall, Ukraine has a good chance of a successful presidency," concluded Tarasyuk.

Deputy Director of the Razumkov Valeriy Chaly said that it is unnecessary to exaggerate the possibilities of chairmanship of this organization.

The expert also said that Kyiv, as part of its OSCE chairmanship, should focus on its main task, particularly the signing of the association agreement with the EU, as the EU member states are also OSCE members.

"The main task for the Foreign Ministry is to promote a key priority for this year, namely the signing of the association agreement with the EU," Chaly said.
