Party of Regions denies systemic irregularities in Ukraine election

The leader of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction, Oleksandr Yefremov, has denied allegations of systemic irregularities during Ukraine's recent parliamentary election.

"The elections were not accompanied by any systemic irregularities. Rather, they saw a tough but honest competition between programs and individuals," he said at a parliamentary session in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"The law on elections of people's deputies, which was adopted by parliament's constitutional majority," contributed to the success of the October 28 vote, Yefremov said.

A key result of these elections was "that for the first time in Ukraine's recent history, representatives of the authorities won in an honest struggle," he said.

Law enforcement agencies and courts will assess individual incidents in some first-past-the-post electoral districts, "where certain candidates' methods went beyond common sense and norms of ethnics," he said.
