Harris, Trump have no motives to surrender Ukraine – Herbst

Both candidates for the U.S. presidency will continue to support Ukraine, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine (2003-2006) John Herbst has said on Friday.

During the 10th Kyiv Security Forum for Youth, organized by Arseniy Yatsenyuk's Open Ukraine Foundation, the diplomat said he saw no difference in the attitude of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump to Ukraine.

Some people expect that Harris would continue Joe Biden's policies, and some think that the Trump administration would surrender Ukraine, he said, adding that the Biden administration is preventing Ukraine from using long-range weapons to strike deep into Russia.

Herbst suggested that Harris' team would be close to Biden's team in terms of positions. On the other hand, if Trump wins, new opportunities may open up for Ukraine, he said.

According to the ambassador, there are people in Trump's entourage who support Ukraine. Among his candidates for important ministerial positions or administrations, there are people who do not want to be seen as pro-Putin. This may eliminate the motives holding back Biden's support for Ukraine, Herbst said.

The Kyiv Security Forum for Youth is the leading platform for engaging young leaders in discussions on national security and international affairs.
