EU security guarantees for Ukraine to be discussed with Kyiv in Dec

Possible security guarantees for Ukraine that the European Union can provide to Kyiv will be the subject of discussion with the Ukrainian side in December during the visit of the EU mission.

A high-ranking European official told Interfax-Ukraine agency about this on Wednesday in Brussels. "The proposals of EU member states will be the subject of discussion in December during the EU mission to Ukraine, which the High Representative (Josep Borrell) spoke about after the Council meeting," he said.

According to the agency's interlocutor, the mission will consist of EU experts, and this visit will not be announced, since the development of such documents is "an ordinary routine process," which is presented in the media "as something big." Moreover, he said, Borrell had already spoken about these proposals.

As reported, on November 13, at the end of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Borrell said at the last Council of the European Union, he was tasked by European leaders to develop the European Union's security commitments to Ukraine. They are working on this with member countries. At the beginning of the month Borrell will send a mission to Ukraine to discuss the proposals with the Ukrainians.

According to him, these proposals will include an initiative to create a section in the European Peace Facility dedicated to Ukraine (proposed EUR 20 billion), and this initiative will be presented to the Council of the European Union in December.
