AFU stabilize situation in Bakhmut direction, but fighting continues there – Cherevaty
The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were able to stabilize the situation near the town of Bakhmut in Donetsk region, but fighting there continues, albeit with less intensity, Spokesman for the AFU Eastern Group of Forces Serhiy Cherevaty said.
"We are confident in our abilities, there is coherence, there is an algorithm, there is an understanding of our capabilities, an understanding of what needs to be done. This is stabilization," Cherevaty said on the air of a national telethon on Sunday, March 26.
"Yesterday there were 18 assaults on the entire Bakhmut frontline, today there were 17. Before that, there were from 35 to 50 or more. However, this requires more detailed verification, analysis. Perhaps the enemy is maneuvering with their reserves, reconnaissance of forces. While he is firing the same dense in Bakhmut direction some 268 shelling was in total, some 94 shelling only of the town of Bakhmut, 17 clashes, 13 ones near the town," Cherevaty said.
According to the Eastern Group spokesman, during the day in Bakhmut direction, the Russian military lost a tank, an airborne combat vehicle, an infantry fighting vehicle, a Gvozdika (Carnation) self-propelled artillery vehicle, two drones, a company command and observation post and ten field ammunition depots.
Cherevaty said that in Lyman-Kupiansk direction, the Russian army has activated artillery in the past few weeks, so shelling does not stop there. "Over the past 24 hours, the invaders have dealt 370 strikes from cannon and rocket artillery. There were ten clashes, the enemy lost a tank, an infantry fighting vehicle, an airborne combat vehicle and, most importantly, the 92nd brigade destroyed an expensive electronic warfare station this morning," Cherevaty said.
He also noted the difference in the actions of the enemy army in Kupiansk-Lyman direction. According to him, they work more professionally in this direction, the battles resemble a classic war with a lot of equipment, regular troops operate there. Therefore, the loss of the enemy is less. So, over the past day, the losses of the Russian Army in Kupiansk-Lyman direction amounted to 60 killed and about 100 wounded, while in Bakhmut, during the period of work of the Wagner mercenaries there, 100 killed was a common occurrence.
Cherevaty also commented on Western intelligence reports that the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has "bogged down." "We didn't let the enemy break through our defense anywhere. We didn't let him achieve any significant success in a strategic offensive operation. Therefore, we can probably agree with this statement," Cherevaty said.
