Russian invaders already steal Ukraine's water worth UAH 620 mln – inspectorate

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the aggressor has illegally received water in the amount worth UAH 620 million by occupying hydraulic structures belonging to the North Crimean Canal (Kherson region) and by directing water to the Crimean peninsula.

The consequences of the destruction by Russia on February 27 of a temporary dam that restricts the supply of water to the temporarily occupied Crimea were reported on the Facebook page of the State Environmental Inspectorate on Thursday.

"Currently, the Russia is taking water from the Kakhovka reservoir in the lower basin of the Dnipro River, due to the partial depressurization of the hydraulic structure of the North Crimean Canal with a throughput capacity of 50 cubic meters per second (4.32 million cubic meters per day). The amount of damage for unauthorized use of Ukraine's water resources is UAH 32.63 million per day. So, the thief has already stolen water for a total of almost UAH 620 million," the State Environmental Inspectorate said.

Direct one-time losses for Ukraine due to the Russian invasion exceed $500 billion, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said on March 16.
