The European Commission aims to double the volume of military assistance to Ukraine and to allocate another EUR 500 million for this purpose, EU diplomat Josep Borrell said on Friday.

"I propose to double the contribution of the EU – to send additional EUR 500 million to armaments in support of the Ukrainian army," BFM TV quoted him as saying during the second day of the informal summit of EU leaders in Versailles.

"Everyone is fully aware that we are forced to increase our military support to Ukraine. I am sure that the leaders will approve the allocation of these funds," he continued.

He noted that the EU is also studying the possibility of imposing more sanctions against the Russian economy and Russian entrepreneurs.

The day before, the representative of the head of EU diplomacy, Peter Stano, recalled that, given Ukraine's requests for armaments, the EU undertook to support the Ukrainian armed forces, having determined their needs at EUR 500 million.

"I will add that the member states agree with this decision and that support for the Ukrainian armed forces is also being carried out bilaterally. Of course, it is up to the EU states to decide what they will supply to Ukraine as part of the use of these EUR 500 million," Stano said, evading a direct answer to the question about the prospect of providing combat aircraft to Ukraine by the European Union.
