UK to provide additional GBP 40 mln humanitarian aid to Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the allocation of GBP 40 million for additional humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, in particular for the supply of medicines, the press service of the British government reports.

It is noted that the assistance is allocated as an addition to wider economic and military support.

"The funding will help aid agencies respond to the deteriorating humanitarian situation, creating a lifeline for Ukrainians with access to basic necessities and medical supplies such as medicines, syringes, dressings and wound care packs. UK Government humanitarian experts have also deployed to the region to support those fleeing the violence in Ukraine," the report says.

The decision follows Johnson's conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who briefed him on the critical need for humanitarian assistance as people are forced to leave their homes for safety.

Also during a meeting with leaders of the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK, Johnson confirmed that any person living on British soil will be able to transport their immediate family from Ukraine.

"In the last days the world has witnessed awe-inspiring displays of bravery and heroism from the Ukrainian people in response to those who seek to obliterate their freedom by force. The UK will not turn our backs in Ukraine's hour of need. We are providing all the economic and military support we can to help those Ukrainians risking everything to protect their country," Johnson said.

The additional aid package brings the total amount of UK government aid pledged to Ukraine this year to GBP 140 million. The prime minister also announced last week that the UK would provide up to $500 million in loan guarantees to Ukraine through the Multilateral Development Banks.
