Ukraine's economy balanced, but external support needed to pay previous debts

The Ukrainian economy is growing, but to pay earlier taken debt commitments the external financial assistance is required, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has said.

"Ukraine's economy has been growing for 11 quarters in a row, and now it is balanced, taking into account the country's needs and ensuring further growth. However, the government still needs external support in order to refinance and go through peak payments on the past debts made during 2008-2013," the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reported on Sunday, citing the prime minister.

"This means that the recovery has begun. In principle, if you look at the needs of the state, everything is normal, we are balanced. But if you look at debts, you need external support in order to refinance the return of old debts. 2019-2021 are the peak payment years," Groysman said.

At the same time, he said that the money is taken to meet certain commitments. And you need to do this work in order to regain creditor confidence. To allow the development of the scenario of giving up all promises now means to turn away from the path of reform and dive into default, which is bringing the complete devaluation of citizens' incomes and another protracted crisis.

"We remember the 1990s: bankruptcy of the country, and galloping inflation. We cannot let that happen again," Groysman said.
