Tymoshenko: Ukraine to do all it can to be NATO, EU member

Ukraine will join NATO and the European Union, leader of the Batkivschyna party Yulia Tymoshenko has said during the presentation of a concept of a new Ukrainian constitution.

She vowed to present a draft constitution before the next presidential election.

"When we talk about our security, our army, which has become stronger, and the weapons that our science and our manufacturers have been giving to Ukraine today, we should also say clearly to ourselves: in reality, a system of strong security, strong protection, and consolidation undoubtedly exists in NATO. And we, as Ukraine, will be in NATO, because we will do all we can to achieve those standards and be 'one for all and all for one', as is stipulated in the treaty," Tymoshenko said in Kyiv.

She said she would also do her utmost for Ukraine to join the European Union.

"Perhaps it would take some time. Perhaps we would build Europe on our soil sooner than they open this door to us, but we will be there anyway," she said.

Tymoshenko also said she was confident that Ukraine's territorial integrity would be restored.

"Let's say today so that the whole world can hear: Donbas will be returned to Ukraine, and Crimea will be returned to Ukraine," she said.

Speaking about the concept of a new constitution, Tymoshenko said over a hundred academics, philosophers, visionaries, and constitutional lawyers are working on its draft.

"Our goal is to show the people a new constitution agreed upon with the entire nation before the next presidential elections in Ukraine," she said.

A new Ukrainian "people's constitution" should be adopted in a nationwide referendum immediately after the election of a new president, she said.

"A new Ukrainian people's constitution should be adopted in a referendum, without counting on the parliament, which symbolizes an oligarchic consensus, is rotten and in ruins, but we need to reach the level of a great people's discussion," Tymoshenko said.
