Over 50 incidents with use of force against journalists recorded in Ukraine this year

Fifty-three incidents of violence against journalists were recorded in Ukraine in the first seven months of 2018, according to the results of the monitoring "The Index of Physical Security of Journalists of Ukraine," which the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) is carrying out jointly with partner organizations.

The NUJU said in a report released on Friday that eight cases of physical aggression against journalists were recorded in July alone, and there were two such cases in June.

"In fact, journalists are beaten in Ukraine every four days! There have been 53 incidents since the beginning of the year in Kyiv and in the regions, with the absence of precedents of decent punishment for attacks on journalists. What is typical, in some attacks we accuse security forces themselves! Therefore, the level of anxiety in journalistic circles about physical security is urgent," NUJU Chairman Serhiy Tomilenko said.

"The Index of Physical Security of Journalists" is a monthly monitoring of the facts of physical aggression against journalists and media outlets in Ukraine.
