Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki only intensifies confrontation between U.S., Russia –MP Friz

The meeting in Helsinki of U.S. and Russian Presidents, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, did not lead to understanding between the sides, but only intensified the existing confrontation between the two countries, Member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and chairwoman of Ukraine's delegation to NATO's Parliamentary Assembly, Iryna Friz, has said.

"President Trump probably already went down in history as the leader of the state, which seeks to resolve conflicts between other countries: South Korea and North Korea, Israel and Palestine, Ukraine and Russia. Probably it sounds subjectively, but after meeting with North Korean leader Trump looked more confident and convincing. However, as for Kim Jong-un, nuclear weapons were only continued developing, which Putin has been demonstrating in front of democratic states for the past 15 years," she wrote on her Facebook page.

According to the parliamentarian, the meeting in Helsinki "only intensified the confrontation between the U.S. and Russia." "The message that the U.S. president repeated several times during a joint press conference was about Putin's assurances of non-interference in the election. In fact, this emphasis was made exclusively for the United States, where interference in elections creates grounds for doubting their legitimacy," she explained.

"Just before the visit to Helsinki, the U.S. Justice Ministry took a step ahead, arresting a Russian woman suspected of lobbying Russia's interests in the U.S., that is, of interfering in Washington's policy. So, the political establishment did everything before the meeting began so that the paths to mutual understanding with the aggressor wouldn't happen," Friz added.

She noted that the Republicans' reaction to the meeting testifies that an interesting thing happened. "Despite the leitmotifs of the meeting and the position of the U.S. president, the only further possible step is the continuation of counteraction to the aggressor. Otherwise, accusations from the political establishment of the United States will only grow," the parliamentarian said.

"At the same time, the fact that the U.S. intelligence chief said that the indicators of the Kremlin's interference in the internal affairs of the U.S. "caught fire," confirms that it is impossible to create a partner format in the current conditions a priori," Friz said.
