Consul of Ukraine in Hamburg recalled during official investigation – Klimkin

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has recalled Ukrainian consul in Hamburg, Vasyl Marushynets, for the time being because of alleged anti-Semitic statements in social networks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said.

"We have already recalled him for disciplinary proceedings. We must find out every detail ... Tomorrow he will be in Kyiv. We will see into this case. But if all the facts are confirmed, because what we saw is not necessarily everything, of course, then there are no chances for such people in the Foreign Ministry," Klimkin said on the air of the ATR TV channel on Monday night.

The minister added that Marushynets himself would explain what exactly he wanted to say with his publications.

"We are a free country, no one will check private Facebook pages, but everyone should have a responsibility," the minister said.

As reported, on May 14, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that disciplinary proceedings had been opened against the consul of Ukraine in Hamburg Marushynets because of alleged anti-Semitic statements in social networks.

Later spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mariana Betsa informed that Marushynets had been suspended from performing his duties for the time of verification.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine unequivocally condemns all manifestations of anti-Semitism, xenophobia, discrimination both in society and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At present, the consul in Hamburg has been suspended from performing his duties. The question of his possible revocation in the near future is being considered," Betsa told the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine agency.
