Donbas water supply to be discussed at next meeting of Trilateral Contact Group for Ukraine - Sajdik

The Trilateral Contact Group mediating the settlement process in eastern Ukraine will draw up suggestions for its next meeting on how to ensure the undisrupted functioning of the water supply system in the conflict area in Donbas, the special representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Trilateral Contact Group, Martin Sajdik, told reporters in Minsk on Wednesday.

The Trilateral Contact Group unanimously backed OSCE Special Monitoring Mission Chief Monitor Ertugrul Apakan's proposal to draft measures in time for the group's next meeting to ensure the undisrupted operations of the region's water supply infrastructure, Sajdik said after the Contact Group's meeting.

It concerns the water supply networks and pumping stations near the populated localities of Vasylivka, Petrivske, Krasny Lyman and the system of the Southern Donbas water pipeline, he said.

The issue of water supply and payments for it were also discussed by the economy subgroup, he said.

The positive thing is that since the end of May, the second payment has already been transferred for water supplies to the certain districts of the Luhansk region, a move that will help provide the population of these districts with water, Sajdik said.

However, a stable mechanism of payments for water supplies has yet to be worked out, he said.
