Poroshenko asks Foreign Ministry to file suit against Russia for maritime law violations

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has instructed the Foreign Ministry to file an international lawsuit against Russia for violating the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

"The president instructed the Foreign Ministry to launch arbitration proceedings against Russia for the violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea," the presidential press secretary, Svyatoslav Tsegolko, wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

As reported, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said on TV that Ukraine will file a large-scale comprehensive suit against Russia in an international court this week, and this claim concerns the violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, has said.

"The first big lawsuit will be lodged as early as this week. It concerns the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is in fact comprehensive, as it contains such fundamental issues as the use of maritime space, infringements on environmental safety, and also cultural heritage facilities. It is a large-scale claim," he told the Svoboda Slova (Freedom of Speech) program on ICTV on Monday evening.

Any claim initiated within the framework of such conventions provides for three stages: the rights, restitution of these rights and compensation, he said. "For sure, we will ask for compensation," he said.
