MP Yehor Sobolev promises to stage revolt if lustration law is scrapped

Samopomich MP Yehor Sobolev, who led the Public Lustration Committee in 2014, has written to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to publically oppose the scrapping of the law "On lustration of authorities".

"I, in public, warn the president of Ukraine – if the law on lustration of authorities is scrapped, I as a lawmaker won't waste time any more for the laws. I'll concentrate on staging a new revolt, which will stop the restoration of Yanukovych system," Sobolev said on Thursday during a sitting of the Constitutional Court on the constitutionality of separate provisions of the law on lustration.

He stressed that one of the keys tasks of a potential revolt would be the recruitment of new judges, and "to punish present [judges] wearing mantles, who for two years have been destroying the public's desire for justice. Also, the judges of the Constitution Court who granted dictatorship powers to Yanukovych and now are considering cancelation of lustration of his regime will finally be punished," he said.

Sobolev also said that judges wear their mantles "exclusively due to the non-activity of the Prosecutor General's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine, whose chiefs were appointed by you, Mr. President."

Sobolev said he is believer in the revolutionary changes in Ukraine, but "if you, [Mr Poroshenko], and your partners, make these changes impossible, we'll have to get back to the revolution."
