Amendments to law on lustration to be initiated at Ukrainian Rada to prevent its repeal

The People's Front faction at the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada will initiate amendments to the law on lustration next plenary week so as to prevent attempts to stop lustration in the country, Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko, a member of People's Front, said on Saturday.

"If such a decision is made [by the Constitutional Court, on repealing the law on lustration], People's Front's position will be very clear and tough: the parliament should vote a bill and resume its effect if the Constitutional Court invalidates some of its provisions," Petrenko told journalists in Kyiv on Saturday.

Amendments to this law were submitted to the parliament several months ago, and they have been cleared with the Venice Commission, and therefore the Rada "can vote for them without any worries in a package," he said.

"I will address the parliament next week, and the Popular Front faction will insist on voting for these amendments, so as not to allow for stopping lustration in Ukraine," Petrenko said.

Petrenko pointed out that Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy had earlier proposed that he submit a new edition of the law on lustration to the Rada on his own behalf.

"My personal position as a citizen and as justice minister is that lustration in Ukraine should be preserved and completed. The Verkhovna Rada has every reason for this, and this is our duty to Ukrainians. The people stood up during the Revolution of Dignity, among other things, to demand the purification of the government bodies from the group close to Yanukovych," Petrenko said.
