Infrastructure ministry demands investigation into illegal flights of Russian airlines in Ukrainian airspace

Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine has asked the Public Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine to open criminal cases against some Russian airlines for illegal flights in Ukrainian airspace, Deputy Infrastructure Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelian said on the sidelines of the Aerocongress 2015 forum in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"We’ve held separate meetings on the issue with the Justice Ministry and Public Prosecutor's Office. We asked the Public Prosecutor's Office to open criminal cases against top managers of Russian airlines which illegally crossed our airspace. We believe that this is not the policy of the captains of the aircraft, this is the deliberate policy of the top managers of these airlines. I hope that these cases will be opened and Interpol will open the relevant card for them," he said.

Omelian said it is unlikely that Russian aircraft will be seized in response.

"As far as we know, arrests of aircraft are impossible, as all aircraft of the airlines are leased, they belong to international companies, in particular, directly to Boeing or Airbus, and if we arrest the aircraft, finally the defender would be owners of the aircraft, not Russia," he said.
