Ukrainian, U.S. presidents discusses on phone Donbas, G7 summit

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and U.S. President Barack Obama discussed the situation in Donbas and coordinated their position ahead of the summit of G7 countries during a phone conversation on Friday.

Poroshenko and Obama coordinated their positions ahead of the meeting of G7 leaders which will be held in Germany on June 7, in particular in the issue of continued pressure on Russia via sanctions with the aim of having Russia and militants to comply with their Minsk commitments, the Ukrainian president's press service reported.

The Ukrainian and U.S. presidents discussed the latest developments in Donbas, particularly after the attack on the Ukrainian forces near Maryinka which is a serious violation of the Minsk agreement.

Poroshenko and Obama agreed that the full implementation of the Minsk agreements is the key to peace in Donbas.

"President Obama took the opportunity to reiterate the U.S. support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. He also praised President Poroshenko's leadership in implementing reforms and achieving tangible results in this area," the statement reads

Poroshenko thanked Obama for U.S. assistance in strengthening Ukraine's defense potential via providing training and equipment and called for further cooperation.
