U.S. to help reform Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office – U.S. Ambassador

The governments of Ukraine and the United States signed an agreement on assistance in law enforcement and criminal justice on Friday and the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will aid the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office in reform, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has said.

The point at issue will be a long-term support for the reform of law enforcement agencies in Ukraine, Pyatt said at a press conference after the signing of the agreement in Kyiv, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent has reported.

According to Pyatt, the agreement covers $26 million in financing from the U.S. government under the Agreement on Police Reform in Ukraine and long-term support by the United States of the Ukrainian people and the government of Ukraine in their work to implement the expectations of Maidan.

The ambassador said that document signed by him and Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov underscores the shared values of Ukraine and the United States.

Pyatt said that the U.S. government would work with the Ukraine to create a government that is free from corruption and respect the rights of people. Ukraine can count on the continued support of the United States, he added.

A priority is work with the Prosecutor General's Office, he said. According to him, the Prosecutor General's Office turned into a black hole of corruption amid the anti-democratic regime of Viktor Yanukovych. A new Prosecutor General's Office should be the vanguard of a new Ukraine. The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI are willing to work with the new team of the Prosecutor General's Office and the agreement provides a legal basis for this cooperation, he said.

The U.S. looks forward to the beginning of Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Bureau, and will also cooperate with that structure. In addition, this agreement will help the U.S. in cooperation with the Ukrainian border guards, Pyatt added.
