Eight checkpoints have been set up at motorways leading to Kyiv with the aim of tightening security, law and order, says Petro Panteleyev, deputy head of Kyiv City State Administration.

"To reinforce the capital's protection in response to the threat of possible terrorist actions, a decision has been made to reinforce the positions at the entrances to the capital. These are concrete installations, where law enforcement officers will stay on duty. If need be, documents and suspicious vehicles and cargos will be inspected at the checkpoints, and so we ask drivers to treat these procedures with understanding, as they will be carried out exclusively in the interests of the capital residents' security and calmness," the city administration quoted Panteleyev as saying on Wednesday.

The checkpoints have been set up on the Odesa, Warsaw, Boryspil, Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, and Brovary Highways, Bohatyrska Street, and Minsk Avenue.

The city rescue services have conducted a number of training exercises to practice actions in emergencies and stepped up the patrolling of streets and the guarding of key infrastructure facilities as part of counterterrorist measures, the city administration said.
