The new wording of Ukraine's national security strategy has helped to rapidly streamline the work of the country's security sector, President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"We have worked under the new wording of the national security and defense strategy for almost a year. The adoption of this important document helped us streamline the work of the security sector in a short time and gradually, step by step, introduce major changes in each of its segments," he said at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine in Kyiv on Friday.

In particular, the head of state said, a number of documents on the reform and development of the Armed Forces were adopted, and structural changes in the defense sector are continuing. In addition, decisions were taken to re-subordinate the border service, and a reorganization of the system of response to emergency situations was launched.

Yanukovych said that the work was being conducted to prepare the reform of law enforcement agencies and that the presidential administration would soon consider respective proposals.

In addition, work was intensified in the sector of environmental safety as part of the national security strategy, in particular, with regard to increasing the level of safety at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.

"The international community is involved in achieving this objective," Yanukovych said.

He said that the National Security and Defense Council would soon present a report on the state of national security in 2012.

The new wording of the national security strategy was adopted by a presidential decree of June 8, 2012.
