Ukrainian book industry needs state support, advertising, says head of Rada committee on culture

Only national policy aimed at support of the Ukrainian publishing will be able to break the deadlock in the industry, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Spirituality Viacheslav Kyrylenko has said.

"If they do not decide that the preservation of book publishing should be a national policy, it will not get going," Kyrylenko said.

According to Kyrylenko, there should be administrative and economic instruments of protection of Ukrainian book industry.

He stressed that about five million books are brought from Russia to Ukraine.

"Some 70% of the book industry products which are being sold in Ukraine are in the Russian language," Kyrylenko said.

The lawmaker also said that Ukraine cannot introduce any quotas on Russian publishers' products.

"I think we have every reason to change the customs tariff policy in book publishing industry," Kyrylenko said.

He stressed however that the policy "should not become a campaign to destroy the Russian books" and no changes should apply to scientific literature for instance, as well as unique literature published in other countries.

The government should give preferences to the domestic publishing industry in Ukraine, he said.

According to him, Ukraine has enough publishing facilities areas and production area. Some of them have become obsolete, but there are modern publishing companies, which are able to produce quality products.

The MP also stressed the need to work on such aspect of book publishing as advertising.
