Rada committee backs increase of scrap exports duty to EUR 30 per tonne

Verkhovna Rada's committee for industrial policy and entrepreneurship has decided to back bill No. 3868 on temporarily increase of exports duty on scrap ferrous metal from EUR 10 per tonne to EUR 30 per tonne for second reading.

Representatives of metal companies in the country seek the increase of the exports duty to EUR 35 per tonne and hope that the parliament would support their proposals.

"I've left the meeting of the committee for industrial policy and entrepreneurship. They discussed the retaining of scrap metal stocks in Ukraine. The figures are worrisome. Despite the acute shortage of scrap metal, Ukraine's scrap exports in the past years have been record breaking. Actually, we sell for a mere song material that can benefit each Ukrainian," Illich Steel Works Director General Yuriy Zinchenko wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday after the committee meeting.

He said that Illich Steel Works permanently faces a shortage of scrap metal, which makes its products more expensive and it is not competitive on the global markets.
