There can be no elections in Ukraine during martial law – Danilov

No elections, including presidential and parliamentary ones, can take place in Ukraine during martial law, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov said.

"I want to emphasize that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) should clearly understand that we have our own Constitution and the laws of our country, according to which we must live. And PACE would be better off doing other things, not allowing the presence of the Russian Federation at home. We will figure it out on our own - according to our laws and according to our Constitution. When there is the introduction of the situation in which we are today, no elections can take place. Period," Danilov said on the telethon.

The NSDC Secretary also expressed the wish that PACE representatives would not indicate how and what Ukraine needs to do.

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Tiny Cox on Tuesday announced the need for Ukraine to hold parliamentary and presidential elections even under martial law. According to him, the allies will have no complaints about Ukraine if the elections are "not perfect."

He also said that he recognizes that martial law and the constitution in Ukraine now do not allow elections to be held in these conditions, so official Kyiv needs to think about how to respond to such a challenge.

Cox also said that he intends to visit Kyiv to discuss this issue.
