Ukrainian military tortured in captivity – Ombudsperson

The Ukrainian military released from captivity of the Russian invaders confirmed the facts of violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War by the Russian Federation, Liudmyla Denisova, Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights, said.

"The Russian Federation grossly violates the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. These facts were confirmed during the last release of Ukrainian citizens from enemy captivity," the Ombudsperson wrote on the Telegram channel on Monday.

She stressed that the Ukrainian servicemen spoke about the inhumane treatment they received in captivity. "They were kept in a field, in a pit, in a garage. Periodically they were taken out one at a time: the invaders beat them, shot at the ear, and intimidated them. The guys from Snake Island, who were taken to Sevastopol in tow, local reporters began to use for propaganda, talking about the humane Russian authorities, which organized the delivery of prisoners home," the Ombudsperson said.

According to her, the prisoners of war were taken to an unknown destination and settled in a tent city at an air temperature of minus 20 degrees, as a result of which many Ukrainian soldiers had frostbite on their limbs. "They were treated like prisoners, morally pressured, and during walks in the yard they let the dog out," Denisova added.

The Ombudswoman emphasized that such actions by Russia are a violation of Article 13 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which emphasizes the humane treatment of prisoners of war.
