Russia must be held accountable, fully compensate for all losses suffered by Ukraine during invasion – foreign ministers of Ukraine, Lithuania

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held a meeting in Lviv on Tuesday with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, during which the parties condemned the Russian invasion and reaffirmed Ukraine's European prospects, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.

The ministers condemned the barbaric aggression that the Russian Federation, with the direct participation of the Republic of Belarus, launched against a sovereign, peaceful and independent Ukraine. The ministers noted the importance of the speedy restoration of the Ukrainian economy after the end of the war. Russia must be held accountable and fully compensate for all the losses Ukraine suffered during the invasion, according to the statement.

The ministers also discussed Ukraine's membership in the European Union, according to the application filed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28, 2022.

Due to Russia's military invasion, Ukraine and Europe found themselves in a special and unprecedented moment in history. Ukraine is now fighting for its security and the security of all of Europe. This should not be forgotten when assessing the prospects for Ukraine's membership in the EU. An emergency situation requires extraordinary steps and decisions. Ukraine belongs to the family of the European Union, the ministry said.

The ministers also discussed the actions of the Russian invaders at the nuclear power facilities of Ukraine, which are a gross violation of many conventions on nuclear safety, in particular, the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.

In this context, the ministers called on the international community to find a way to force Russia to withdraw its troops from peaceful nuclear facilities, introduce at least 30-kilometer demilitarized zones around nuclear power plants, as well as ensure proper working conditions for personnel and provide them with the opportunity to rest.
