Tymoshenko urges Ukrainians to demand cancelation of decision to raise gas prices

Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has urged Ukrainians to gather outside the building of the presidential administration of Ukraine, as well as regional state administrations, on Wednesday, October 24, and demand the cancelation of the decision to raise gas tariffs.

"We believe that now we need to help people unite all efforts in order to stop these mega-adventurous deals that are being conducted with the gas price today [...] People are extremely outraged. I have not seen such aggressive attitude of people to the authorities for a long time. They don't know how to live, how to heat their homes. They don't understand what to pay with [...] People ask for action," the Batkivschyna website quoted Tymoshenko as saying at a press conference in Vinnytsia on Tuesday.

She also called the promise by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on strengthening subsidies "another deception" since the draft budget for 2019 adopted at first reading provides for expenses on subsidies for housing and utility services at a level one-and-a-half times less than this year.

"How can we simultaneously increase gas and heat prices by a quarter, reduce spending on subsidies by a third and tell about strengthening the subsidy program? [...] We will fight against such a policy of destroying the nation," Tymoshenko said.

She also said that the new authorities would at least halve the cost of natural gas in a matter of weeks and "there will be no default without a rise in gas prices."

According to Tymoshenko, it is necessary to conduct negotiations with the IMF, but on Ukraine's terms.
