Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko proposes a note on Ukraine's decision not to extend the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with the Russian Federation be circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly and Security Council.

"On Monday, I am leaving for New York City to attend the UN General Assembly. The day before yesterday, the committee supported the Ukrainian draft resolution on Crimea, and I instructed that the message, the note of Ukraine on the non-extension of the Treaty be circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly and Security Council so that no one had any doubts that Ukraine has finally left the Soviet legacy, the Russian Empire behind, and our fantastic people returned to the family of the peoples of the European Union," Poroshenko said during an official ceremony of issuing 10 millionth biometric passport in Kyiv on Friday.

As reported, on September 6, 2018, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine supported the initiative of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to not extend the Treaty on Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation with the Russian Federation for 10 years. At the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Poroshenko said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine would be instructed to send a note to the Russian side as soon as possible to inform that the Treaty would not be extended: "Based on the results of the NSDC meeting, there will be a decision and an instruction to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to send the note to the Russian side in the shortest possible time."

On September 17, the president by his decree introduced the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of September 6, 2018, not to prolong the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, signed on May 31, 1997.

According to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, the Foreign Ministry should inform the UN, the OSCE and other international organizations about Ukraine's plans not to extend the Treaty of Friendship with Russia, as well as the reasons for this decision.
