Kyiv seeking clarification from U.S. about Trump-Putin talks about Ukraine – sources

Kyiv has asked for clarification from Washington regarding any discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki about "new proposals" for ending Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine and Crimea, a diplomat told the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

"Ukraine asked for official clarification from Washington about the alleged discussion during the American-Russian summit in Helsinki about what the Russian president said in an interview with Russian media were 'new proposals for settling the situation in Ukraine's southern and eastern regions'," the source told Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

The source said Kyiv has asked Washington to officially refute the claim if it cannot be confirmed.

As earlier reported, Trump and Putin met in Helsinki on July 16.

Putin later in an interview with Russian media said he and Trump had agreed on exploring new ways to regulate the situation in southern and eastern regions of Ukraine.

"Secondly, we spoke about Ukraine. There are several new ideas about regulating the crisis in the southeastern part of the country. We agreed to explore them on the level of experts. I think this constitutes a positive step forward," Putin said.
