Death toll from deadly road accident in Kharkiv rises to six

One of those injured in a deadly road accident in Kharkiv on October 18 died in hospital early on Thursday, Kharkiv Regional State Administration's press service has reported.

"Diana Berchenko died today at 09.45," the report says.

According to the media, Berchenko was 24 years old. She was in city hospital No. 4, and earlier her condition was assessed as stable. Her sister, 27-year-old Oksana Berchenko, who was injured in the same accident, is undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

As earlier reported, late on October 18, at the intersection of Sumska Street and Mechnykova Street in Kharkiv, a Lexus RX sedan driven by Zaitseva, born in 1997, ran a red light and crashed into a Volkswagen Touareg. As a result of the accident, the Lexus ran over 11 pedestrians on the sidewalk, five of whom (four young women and a young man) died.

The accident is being investigated pursuant to Part 3, Article 286 (driving infractions leading to the death of persons) of Ukraine's Criminal Code. The maximum prison sentence for the crime is a ten-year prison term.

Kharkiv's Kyivsky District Court on October 20 arrested Zaitseva for 60 days, setting no bail.

The head of the National Police office in Kharkiv, Oleh Bekh, said on October 21 that the status of the Volkswagen driver could change after a number of forensic examinations are completed.
