Merkel proposes making Normandy meetings regular

Normandy format meetings should be carried out on a regularly basis, because Germany and France intend to accompany the process of implementation of the Minsk agreements, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said.

"It is necessary to hold such meetings permanently and regularly in order to continue working on this process," she said on Thursday night at a joint press conference with French President Francois Hollande following the talks in the Normandy format.

"We face great tasks: France and Germany will continue to accompany this process, for the Minsk agreements are the foundation that we have at our disposal, the only agreements that will enable us to overcome the situation where the truce is continuously violated," Merkel said.

According to the German chancellor, the situation is complicated, but the sides’ efforts "justify themselves."

She said that they discussed an access of the International Red Cross Committee to certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

"We also talked about the humanitarian activities which are very important, because people, who live in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions are experiencing great suffering. The point at issue is that the International Red Cross should have free access to these regions to ensure creation of pedestrian passes to those areas occupied by the militant groups," the German chancellor said.

In general, Merkel said that the Normandy Quartet negotiations, that took place in Berlin, did not bring a miracle.

"The progress that we made [last year during Normandy format talks] in Paris was quite limited, and today has not brought a miracle," Merkel said.
