Vinnytsia gets rid of Soviet time street names – Groysman

Vinnytsia city authorities have changed the Soviet time street names in accordance with the law on the condemnation of the Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and the ban on propaganda of their symbols, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Groysman has said.

"My own Vinnytsia has got rid of the Soviet time [street] names. I thank my colleagues for the beautiful new street names. At first, perhaps, it might be a little bit unusual, but thanks to decommunization we are regaining our history, the history of Ukraine, and the history of Vinnytsia," he wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

Groysman also noted that Google had promptly responded and the new street names have already been incorporated in the search engine.

As reported, on May 15, 2015, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko signed the following four laws on decommunization: 'On the condemnation of the communist and national socialist (Nazi) regimes and prohibition of propaganda of their symbols', 'On the access to archives of repressive bodies of the Communist totalitarian regime of 1917-1991,' 'On the commemoration of the victory over Nazism in the 2nd World War of 1939-1945', and 'On the legal status and commemoration of fighters for Ukraine's independence in the 20th century.'

The documents ban Soviet symbols, denounce the Communist regime, open archives of Soviet special services, and recognize the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (forbidden in the Russian Federation) and some other organizations as fighters for Ukraine's independence.
