New Year's Tree to be placed between Sofiyska, Mykhailivska Squares in Kyiv

The main New Year's Tree in Kyiv will be placed between Sofiyska and Mykhailivska Squares and will be lit on Saint Nicholas Day (December 19), Deputy Head of Kyiv City State Administration Anna Starostenko has said.

New Year fairgrounds will be organized at another four of the main squares in the capital – Poshtova, Kontraktova, Troiytska (near National Sports Complex Olympiysky), and Spivoche Pole.

Starostenko stressed that the New Year's and Christmas holidays will be funded by sponsors and budget funds will only be spent on presents and tickets for New Year's Day performances for orphans and children living with poor families.

Fireworks will not be set off on New Year's Eve due to the ongoing conflict in Donbas.

FolkUkraine project founder Ihor Dobrutsky reported that the main New Year's Tree, which will reach 26 meters high, will come from Ivano-Frankivsk this year.

He also said that the New Year fairground with a total area of 4,500 hectares will stretch over Sofiyska Square, Mykhailivska Square, and Volodymyrska Hirka (Hill).

Sofiyska square will be designed to resemble a skating rink.
