Ukraine wants local elections to be held on uncontrolled part of Donbas, but only with security guarantees – deputy PM

The Ukrainian administration is interested in local elections being held in all regions of Donbas, but only with security guarantees, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Hennadiy Zubko said.

"We are not dividing Ukraine into zones where elections can or cannot be conducted. We say, know and want the elections to be held on the territories uncontrolled by Kyiv too," he told a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

Zubko named the conditions under which local elections can be held there: the fulfillment of the provisions of the Minsk agreements, specifically, the liberation of the Ukrainian territories from the Russian troops, the restoration of border control, the presence of international observers and guarantees of citizens' security.

"As to elections to the territories we control, I can assure you that they will go with full guarantees of citizens' security […] the heads of the Donetsk and Luhansk military-civilian administrations have been set the task to ensure security at polling stations and ensure the election process without intimidation, threats, or the possibility of attacks […] Elections [should be] conducted in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on the controlled part if there is any possibility. If the solution is found, the elections will be conducted," Zubko said.
